Owhata

Kia ora koutou,

Ko Tina Rewi-McRoy toku ingoa.  I am the Kaiako in the Satellite Unit at Owhata Primary School.  I have four amazing Teacher Aides, they are Dhayna Walden, Karen McIntosh, Marilyn Campos and our newest team member for 2024 is Vicki Harris.

We have five boys and two girls, ages ranging from 6-11 years old.  Students: Ben Kingi, Cylis Clarke, Pedro Kingi, Rex-Takiri Moke-Evetts, Te Wiroa Himona-Eparaima, Ivy Cooper and Kendyll Stewart.

All students have Individual Educational Plans that cater to their individual needs.  The Educational Plans have input from Parents/Caregivers/Whanau, Specialists and the Class Teacher.

Our specialists include a Speech and Language Therapist: Mandana Mostakhdem, Occupational Therapist: Katharina Hall, Physiotherapist: Ann Dooley.  Vision and Mobility Therapist: Michelle Bunce and Aiden Taipeti: Kapa Haka Tutor.

All tamariki have the opportunity to participate in horse-riding with EquiSucceed formerly known as Riding for the Disabled (RDA). We have Junior Sports Day every term as well as an Annual Cross-Country and School Picnic at Lake Okareka.  We also have Grandparent Day and Whanau Morning Teas.

Along with applying all students’ individual needs i.e Standing frames, walking frames, ankle and foot orthoses (AFOs), splints wheelchairs and IEP Goals,  (Individual Education Plans) tamariki also participate in Sensory Programs, Sensory Timetable,  Cooking, Art, Fitness, Yoga, Music, Dance, Math and Reading.

Te Reo Māori and New Zealand Sign Language, visuals, communication devices and switches go hand in hand with English.  Karakia Timatanga, Karakia mo te Kai and Karakia Whakamutunga are normalised and used daily at the appropriate times.

Community facilities are widely used such as the Redwood Forest, Agrodome and the local parks.   Tamariki also has access to the heated swimming pool at QE Health.
