Kawaha Point

Kia Ora, hello everyone and a very warm welcome to Room 12!

We are a satellite class based at Kawaha Point School. The joyful akonga that make up our class are 4 boys: Psalm, Stephen, Art and Christino.

Teacher: Jacqui Skidmore

Teacher Aide: Sam and Liza

Every term we base our teaching and learning programme around aspecific topic focus, and each child has a set IEP (IndividualEducation Plan) that personalises their learning goals, working at their own individual pace and level.  Community involvement and integration is an important part of our classroom programme.  We love to visit our local areas and attractions such as The Redwood (Whakarewarewa Forest), parks, playgrounds, Rotorua Public Library and Agrodome.  We enjoy having morning tea at our favourite park, the Tree Trust (Centennial Park), and also playing on the many amazing playgrounds Rotorua has.  At EquiSucceed NZ we enhance our emotional and mental well being by being on and around horses.   Through riding a horse, we learn to develop empathy, form a nurturing relationship with animals and it also helps to improve our strength. balance, coordination and posture of our bodies.

During class time, play based learning is a vital part of our daily programme.  This involves sensory play, nature play, free play and guided play.  Play based learning helps children learn valuable skills to support cognitive, social and physical development.  We enjoy being a part of our wider school community at Kawaha Point School and we embrace opportunities to build relationships and social skills with our mainstream peers.  We use the Kawaha Point school library, playgrounds and are invited to be involved in wider school activities.  Each week we are lucky to work alongside amazing Specialists; such as a Speech Language Therapist (Mandana), Occupational Therapist (Katrina)  and Physiotherapist (Ann).  We enjoy this one on one time that is specific to help meet our learning needs and goals.  Having fun, developing a strong sense of belonging and striving to reach our full potential is what makes Room 12 such a special classroom.

Nga mihi nui.
